Aromatherapy is the use of distilled extracts of aromatic plants for stress relief. It has now been documented that approximately 85 – 95% of today’s illnesses/diseases are stress-related. Aromatherapy, an ancient Egyptian science and art, is a non-toxic way to release stress from the body. The essential oils are the life essence substances of plants. They have therapeutic properties that assist the body in relieving stress on the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.
You can make essential oils blends with a carrier oil and apply the blends to the skin. You can also use blends in bath water, on compresses (both hot and cold), in facial steamers, in facial treatments, massage oils, body wraps, and in diffusers. Tea Tree and Lavender are the only two essential oils that can be applied to the skin without a carrier oil, an oil that is used as a base for an essential oil to prevent skin irritation.
It works primarily through your sense of smell. You inhale a scent which stimulates the olfactory pathways in the brain. The scent creates a certain memory and emotion. Some essential oils that may evoke noticeable psychological reactions are the following: orange, lime, pine, cinnamon, and rosemary.
The essential oil blends can be applied to the skin using a dermal application. Within two hours, the blends are within the blood stream relieving stress from the body. They will exit the body within 10 hours through perspiration or bodily fluids. Some of the essential oils that can be used to relieve physical stress from the body are the following: eucalyptus and peppermint.
